Healthy Youth Healthy Families - HYHF is a grass roots effort in the developmental stage, made up of several community groups, church groups, parents, youth and YOU. We aspire to build Healthy Youth Healthy Families to be the premiere group in the Carteret County to address the void in youth services! We are making plans to take action TODAY and we need your help!

A Lil’ History
January 6, 2008: The Skateboard Park Initiative met with 55 in attendance. Discussion centered around comparing the pros & cons of having a skate park within a municipality, privately opperated, or through a non-profit. Other discussion items included the importance of advocacing to elected officials and the community at large to dispell the myths regarding the risk & liabilities of operating a Skate Park. Approximately 12 youth show up supported by 19 adults. The youth divided up into three areas of interest as : Skate Board Park, Teen café’, and Misc. Activities for youth. The adults grouped up to begin outlining a plan to develop a Mission and goals for Health Youth Healthy Families. At the end of the meeting the youth reported the following goals and agreed to meet again Thursday, July 26 – 6 @ the Boys & Girls Clubs along with the adults to report on the status of goals set. · Skate Board Park – stated they need to research the law, possible grants and available land. · Teen Café’ – stated they would like to establish a short term goal of hosting bands in an available venue, while the long term goal would be to establish a Teen Café’ which would take resources. May 10, 2007 - The 1st Teen Town Hall took place at the Boys & Girls Club with 120 participants. The on-line survey results were shared. The recurring theme between survey results and teen town hall participants, were three areas of interested: 1. Skate Board Park, 2. Teen café’ and 3. Misc. Activities for youth.
December 31, 2007: Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina - Sunshine Lady Club in collaboration with Salvation Army hosted a Rockin New Year's Eve - Teen Night out to benefit the Skateboard Park Initiative. A Battle of the Bands featuring Dismal Sky and Breaking Silence provided entertainment for 99 participants. Many sponsors and donors are to be thanked for their contributions to this event.
December 6, 2007: 20 Members from the Skateboard Park Initiative attended the Town of Newports Parks & Recreation citizens input meeting to request consideration for a Skateboard Park to be included in the the Park plans.
September, October & November 2007: The Skateboard Park Initiative launched with the help of parent members Rhonda Mayton & Katie Pliscofsky. Several meetings were held to discuss strategies, locations and ideal skate park ammenities.
June, July & August 2007: The Salvation Army & Boys & Girls Clubs collaborated in host a Summer Series of the Battle of the Bands.
June 12, 2007 - The first follow up meeting after the Teen Town Hall took place. The purpose of the meeting was to provide youth with an outlet to begin planning for the things they stated they wanted.
April 2007 - 320 youth surveys were collected on-line.
March 2007 - A steering committee formed to organize the county’s first Teen Town Hall.
